I guess I have to somewhat admire the guy for trying to think of the big picture for the country instead of "Dang it, I'm gonna get a pay cut, aren't I?", because that's probably what my first thought would have been.

Pay cut? More like preemptive job cut for Mr pre-med student here. Then again, you may have not heard of the popular '80s Soviet phrase about pretending to work for pretend pay.
